Definition, approaches and tips for getting started

Genealogy is much more than names in a tree: it is a fascinating investigation into our origins and those of our ancestors.
Definition of genealogy
Genealogy is the study of the filiation links between members of a family, whether vertically (ancestors or descendants) or horizontally (siblings, cousins, collateral branches). The objective is to establish family ties and reconstruct the history of a lineage. There are two main notions of filiation: - Biological filiation: blood link between a parent and a child. - Legal filiation: link recognized by law, often in the context of an inheritance.
Family genealogy
The goal of family genealogy is to trace the history of a family for an individual. This involves gathering information, developing a family tree, and sometimes creating an illustrated family book.
Inheritance genealogy
Probate genealogy aims to locate the heirs of an estate, often at the request of a notary. It is regulated by law and requires a detailed research report. In France, approximately 8,000 estates per year require the intervention of a probate genealogist.
How to start your genealogy?
In France
To begin:
1. Organize yourself with software like Heredis or Généatique.
2. Interview older family members.
3. Consult public archives: free access to documents over 100 years old and early access possible with proof of parentage.
Internationally
The procedures are similar, but the rules vary by country. Some charge for access or impose restrictions. Platforms like MyHeritage or FamilySearch sometimes facilitate access.
Online tools: allies or traps?
Sites like Geneanet, MyHeritage, and Ancestry offer quick access to millions of indexed records. However, since this data is often entered by volunteers, it can contain errors. Rigor is therefore essential.
And you, are you ready to start?
Genealogy is an adventure where every document found is a victory. Do you want to discover who your ancestors were, where your last name comes from, or what story lies behind your lineage?
